Mahimahi
Mahi Mahi, also known locally as Mahimahi or Dolphin Fish, are among the most colorful, dynamic, and beloved species in Hawaiian sportfishing. Instantly recognizable by their golden bodies and vivid green-and-blue sides—though those brilliant hues fade to yellowish-gray soon after landing—their eye-catching appearance makes every catch something to photograph.
Size & Sportfishing Appeal
On average, Mahi Mahi in Hawaii weigh around 20 pounds, offering energetic and exciting action on light gear. However, larger specimens—some reaching up to 82 pounds—have been caught, giving anglers a thrilling fight and brag-worthy catch. Their lively behavior and stunning appearance make them a favorite for both novice and experienced anglers.
Fishing Methods
Most Mahi Mahi in Hawaii are line-caught using trollers—either with lures or live bait. Longline vessels also contribute to the commercial catch, but for most sportfishing charters, trolling near bait schools is the go-to method. Their response to fast-moving bait makes them a particularly active and rewarding target during the prime season.
Why They’re Prized
Beyond their fight and beauty, Mahi Mahi are celebrated for their exceptional eating qualities. With thin skin and firm, light pink flesh that turns white when cooked, they offer a mildly sweet, delicate flavor that shines in a variety of preparations—especially grilled, broiled, sautéed, or even tempura. Renowned for their freshness, Hawaiian Mahi Mahi are highly regarded on menus across the islands. Nutritionally, they are an excellent source of lean protein, low in saturated fat and sodium, rich in niacin, vitamin B12, phosphorus, selenium, and pack around 400 mg of omega-3 fatty acids per 4-ounce serving. Importantly, the local population is considered sustainably fished, with stable supplies and careful, responsible practices.

Season & Availability
Mahi Mahi are available in Oahu’s waters year-round, with peak abundance between March and September. During these months, their high metabolism makes them swift to chase down sardines and mackerel, making live bait and medium-weight tackle particularly effective for landing these vibrant fish.
