A‘u lepe

Pacific Sailfish, known locally as A‘u lepe, are among Hawaii’s rarest and most breathtaking deep-sea encounters. Instantly identifiable by their dramatic sail-like dorsal fin—tinted with deep blues and lavenders—and slender, agile form, these fish offer one of the most visually stunning and energetically captivating experiences available to anglers in Hawaiian waters.

Size & Sportfishing Appeal

These sleek predators typically weigh around 45 pounds, making them more approachable than larger billfish—but this doesn’t mean they lack excitement. Hawai‘i’s state record tips the scales at nearly 120 pounds, pushing the boundaries of what a sailfish can become in our waters. Once hooked, expect a whirlwind of high-speed jumps and acrobatic bursts—they may not have the brute strength of a marlin, but their aerial show and spirited fight are unforgettable.

Fishing Methods

Anglers typically encounter sailfish while trolling with live mackerel or goggle-eye baits. Once a sail appears, the excitement unfolds as you switch to bait and hope for that explosive strike. Their rapid movements and surface activity create a dramatic visual that’s as thrilling as the catch itself.

Why They’re Prized

Land a sailfish, and you’ll earn respect—and epic storytelling fuel—for years to come. Their rarity, beauty, and aerial grace make them a bucket-list encounter, even if the fight is relatively short-lived. While their flesh is edible and occasionally sampled, Pacific Sailfish are most often released, allowing anglers to appreciate their brilliance and preserve future chances for others to chase these unforgettable ocean speedsters.

Season & Availability

Pacific Sailfish are not a common catch—they appear in Hawaiian waters sporadically year-round. While there is no strict seasonal pattern, sightings are most frequent from May through November, when warmer currents sometimes bring schools of sailfish into proximity with local coastlines. Their rarity makes encountering one a truly memorable event for anyone ocean-bound.
