Nairagi / A‘u

Striped Marlin, known locally as Nairagi or A‘u, are one of Hawaii’s most elegant and visually striking billfish. Instantly recognizable by their slender bills, vivid lavender-and-blue stripes, and high-pointed dorsal fins, these fish are a favorite among anglers for both their beauty and their spirited fight.

Size & Sportfishing Appeal

These striking fish typically weigh between 40 and 100 pounds, with larger specimens occasionally reaching up to 130 pounds. Their size makes them more approachable for anglers seeking thrilling action without the extreme challenge of larger marlin. The vibrant stripes and graceful jumps add a dramatic flair to the hunt, making every catch as photogenic as it is exciting.

Fishing Methods

Striped Marlin in Hawaii are almost exclusively caught by line-caught methods. The majority come from longline vessels fishing in open ocean waters. However, during certain seasons, they can also be taken by slow trolling nearshore using live bait or lures—particularly when they move into shallower waters.

Why They’re Prized

Nairagi is widely regarded as the most tender and delicious of all marlin species. The flesh ranges in color from delicate light pink to rich orange-red, with the deeper hues particularly prized for sashimi. Their mild flavor and firm, melt-in-your-mouth texture make them perfect for raw preparations like sashimi, poke, and carpaccio, while also shining in grilled, sautéed, or tempura dishes. A lean but nutritious protein, Striped Marlin is rich in niacin, vitamins B6 and B12, phosphorus, selenium, and packs an impressive 825 mg of omega-3s per 4-ounce serving—making it both a gourmet and health-conscious choice.

Season & Availability

Striped Marlin are most abundant in the waters around Oahu from December to March, though they remain present in smaller numbers throughout the year. On a seasonal chart, catch activity is particularly strong during the winter and spring months, with a noticeable dip during the summer months when they migrate through the island chain.
